HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Before being established as a separate town in 1819, Essex was the part of Ipswich known as Chebacco Parish. Upon its incorporation, it didn't take long for this close-knit community to make a name for itself in the shipbuilding industry. Some reports show that more than 4,000 ships were constructed by Essex builders, including many of the famous Gloucester fishing schooners.
Prior to making its mark in shipbuilding, Essex citizens made their living in typical early industries such as shoemaking, farming, tanning and carriage making. However, by 1845 shipbuilding had taken a firm hold on the economy and Essex excelled. For a more thorough look at its history, visit the official Web site of Essex here: Town of Essex.
